ASUU Slams Kaduna Varsity VC Over Unauthorized Strike Suspension

Kaduna State University (KASU) is facing confusion following conflicting reports on the suspension of the ongoing ASUU strike.

At a press conference on Thursday, Vice Chancellor Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa announced that ASUU-KASU had called off its strike and classes would resume immediately.

He said the decision came after Governor Uba Sani approved a ₦50 million monthly allocation for staff welfare and released ₦146 million to settle unpaid salaries and SIWES allowances.

Musa added that the governor also approved the retention of a portion of the university’s internally generated revenue to boost financial autonomy.

Describing the interventions as bold and historic, Musa praised the governor’s commitment to students’ needs and the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff.

He also revealed that Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe now leads a high-level committee engaging with all university unions to resolve outstanding issues. Musa also said Governor Sani has shown rare sensitivity to issues that have affected university staff for more than a decade.

However, ASUU-KASU denied suspending the strike and called the VC’s announcement misleading, stressing that management has no authority to end the action. In a joint statement, Acting ASUU Chairman Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi and Secretary Comrade Peter Waziri insisted only the union’s National Executive Council can end the strike.

They emphasized that ASUU-KASU is still awaiting NEC’s decision following resolutions reached at the May 15, 2025, congress. The union urged the public to disregard the vice chancellor’s announcement, calling it unauthorized and contrary to ASUU’s principles.
